Meg Corbyn, a cassandra sangue (blood prophet), is on the run for her very life. She finds a place that will accept her with the Others (shape-shifters). Getting hired as the Human Liaison, who accepts all incoming mail. Meg is taught how humans live, by her new friends.
Meeting friends from all walks of life. Meg becomes part of the Lakeside Courtyard. She is befriended by many Others & the Elementals. When it comes out who Meg is & why she is running, it becomes a battle between some of the humans & the Others.
There is a lot to add, but doing so could destroy the read. Ms. Bishop created an amazing world where humans are the feared ones (for a change), where humans actually see them place “on the totem pole.”
I enjoyed this book so much, that I had our library order the 1st & 2nd books of the series! (Something I have rarely done.) 
Yes, I am reading book 2 now, Murder of Crows!
